2026 is proving to be the year for soft tailoring to have its time in the sun, quite literally and why not it’s a great look if it’s done right.
Firstly, what do we mean when we say soft tailoring? Well, tailoring has a reputation for being about structure, think about those classic suits and jackets that we have seen throughout the years, firm shoulder pads to create definition and strong shoulder lines. Heavy canvassed interiors to create shape and defined silhouettes, perhaps a more robust cloth that holds shape and creates form. Essentially a suit that creates a shape and holds it. Clear, concise and with clean lines.
Want soft tailoring? Well then do the opposite, more or less. Maybe lighten the weight of the shoulder pads or even take them out completely. Go for a cloth that has more drape, something that flows a little more, take out the body canvas to lighten the garment and break up the lines a little more.
A great example of soft tailoring would be a Harrington style jacket or a tailored bomber (both of which we love making by the way) something light and unstructured that goes well with a more casual look without having to throw all of the more traditional tailoring aspects out of the window.
A great fitting garment doesn’t have to follow the body or be closely cut to work its magic. Playing with shape and form is a key part of tailoring and style and being playful is a joy in both wearing clothes and making them.
In recent years we have all been encouraged to relax in how we dress. Don’t wear a suit to the office, heck, don’t come into the office at all. Got a special event, don’t worry no one is dressing up for it, come as you are.
All of which is fine and even as a tailor I won’t fight against it, we all like to feel comfortable and relaxed but, what about if you like dressing up, putting effort in to the look, the joy of wearing something considered and well made, it won’t surprise you that I am all for that too.
Soft tailoring is a great way to bridge that gap and not have to worry about being over dressed, something that can feel as bad as being under dressed. Grab out those favourite navy chinos, pop on those loafers you don’t wear enough, that plain white T will look great with those and then over the top goes that soft tailored jacket you love, the one where you chose the cloth, picked the details and demonstrated your eye for style. Then finish it off with that pocket square you found in that cool menswear shop you love going in.
Whatever, you know the drill.
Embracing soft tailoring is not only on trend but it’s a great way to enjoy style and bridge the gap between dressing down and being buttoned up as they say.
Shoulder pads! Who needs them?!
